Adams County, Ohio is located in the south-central part of the state and is part of the Appalachian region. It was founded in 1797 and named after the second President of the United States, John Adams. The county was originally part of the Northwest Territory and was one of the original counties of the state of Ohio. The first settlers in Adams County were mostly of German and Irish descent. The county was largely agricultural, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. The county was also home to a number of small industries, including sawmills, gristmills, and distilleries. During the Civil War, Adams County was a major supplier of food and supplies to the Union Army. The county was also home to a number of Union soldiers, including the famous General William Tecumseh Sherman. In the late 19th century, Adams County experienced a period of rapid growth and development. The county was home to a number of coal mines, which provided jobs for many of the county's residents. The county also became a major center for the production of glass and pottery. In the early 20th century, Adams County was home to a number of large manufacturing companies, including the Adams County Glass Company and the Adams County Pottery Company. The county also became a major center for the production of furniture and other wood products. Today, Adams County is home to a number of small towns and villages, including West Union, Manchester, and Peebles.
