Ashtabula County, Ohio is located in the northeastern corner of the state and is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton metropolitan area. It is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Trumbull County to the east, Geauga County to the south, and Cuyahoga County to the west. The county was established in 1807 and named after the Native American word for "river of many fish." The area was first inhabited by the Iroquois and Erie tribes, who were later displaced by the Wyandot and Delaware tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s, and the county was officially established in 1807. The county was largely agricultural in its early years, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. The county also had a thriving lumber industry, with many sawmills located along the Ashtabula River. The county was also home to several important industries, including iron and steel production, glass manufacturing, and shipbuilding. There are three Common Pleas Courts in Ashtabula County that have jurisdicition over adult civil actions, criminal felony cases, domestic relations, and appeals from administrative agencies. Due to its increasing case load, the Ashtabula County Probate Court uses a Magistrate to assist the Judge in the operation of the Court. The Magistrate hears cases and issues decisions which may become the Court’s Order or be modified by the Judge upon review.

Mar. 2—The Ohio Supreme Court will not hear an attempt to reopen the appeal of Justin Furmage's rape conviction. Furmage was convicted of eight counts of rape, first-degree felonies, and eight counts of gross sexual imposition, third-degree felonies, in September 2020, according to Ashtabula County court records. Judge Thomas Harris sentenced Furmage to 155 years to life in prison.
