Athens County, Ohio is located in the southeastern part of the state and is part of the Appalachian region. It was formed in 1805 from Washington County and is named after the ancient Greek city-state of Athens. The county seat is Athens, Ohio, which is also the home of Ohio University. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans, including the Shawnee, Delaware, and Wyandot tribes. The first white settlers arrived in the late 1700s, and the county was officially established in 1805. The county was an important part of the Underground Railroad, with many of the county's residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. During the Civil War, the county was a major supplier of food and other supplies to the Union Army. In the late 1800s, the county experienced a period of rapid growth and development. The Ohio Central Railroad was built in the county in 1869, connecting Athens to other parts of the state. This allowed for the development of industry and commerce in the area. Athens County is home to many historic sites, including the Athens County Courthouse, the Athens County Historical Society, and the Athens County Museum. The county is also home to many parks and recreational areas, including Strouds Run State Park, Lake Hope State Park, and the Wayne National Forest. Today, Athens County is a vibrant and diverse community. It is home to Ohio University, which is the oldest university in the state, as well as Hocking College and several other educational institutions. The county is also home to many businesses, including manufacturing, healthcare, and technology companies.
