Carroll County, Ohio is located in the northeastern part of the state and is part of the greater Canton-Massillon metropolitan area. The county was established in 1833 and named after Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and Irish descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The county seat is Carrollton, which was founded in 1833 and is the oldest town in the county. The county was an important part of the Underground Railroad, with many of the county's residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. The county was also home to several Civil War battles, including the Battle of Malvern Hill. In the late 19th century, the county experienced a period of industrial growth, with the establishment of several coal mines and other industries. This period of growth was followed by a period of decline in the early 20th century, as the coal industry declined and the Great Depression hit the area hard. In the mid-20th century, the county experienced a period of growth and development, with the establishment of several new industries and businesses. The county is now home to several large employers, including the Timken Company, the Hoover Company, and the Aultman Hospital. Today, Carroll County is a largely rural area, with a population of around 28,000. The county is home to several small towns and villages, as well as several state parks and recreational areas.
