Defiance County, Ohio is located in the northwestern corner of the state and is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Area. It was established in 1845 from parts of Williams, Fulton, and Henry counties. The county was named after Fort Defiance, which was built by General “Mad” Anthony Wayne during the Northwest Indian War in 1794. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The first county seat was located in Hicksville, but it was moved to Defiance in 1845. The Native Americans were largely removed from the area in the 1830s, and the county was opened up for settlement. During the Civil War, Defiance County was home to several Union regiments, including the 8th Ohio Infantry and the 11th Ohio Cavalry. The county also saw action during the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. In the late 19th century, the county saw a period of growth and development. The railroad arrived in the area in 1871, and the county was home to several manufacturing companies, including the Defiance Machine Company and the Defiance Foundry. The county also saw a period of growth in the early 20th century. The Defiance Public Library was established in 1904, and the Defiance College was founded in 1906.
