Fayette County, Ohio is located in the southwestern part of the state and is part of the Appalachian region. It was established in 1810 and named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military officer who fought alongside the American colonists during the Revolutionary War. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and English descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The first county seat was located in Washington Court House, which was established in 1810. The county was divided into two townships, Madison and Jefferson, in 1817. The county experienced significant growth in the 19th century, with the construction of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1845. This allowed for increased trade and transportation of goods, and the population of the county grew rapidly. The county was also home to several important historical events. In 1859, the famous Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman passed through Fayette County on her way to freedom. In 1863, the Battle of Buffington Island was fought in the county, and in 1864, the Battle of Cynthiana was fought in the county. Fayette County has also been home to several notable people, including U.S. President William Henry Harrison, who was born in the county in 1773. Other notable people from the county include U.S. Senator John Sherman, who was born in the county in 1823, and U.S. Senator John Bricker, who was born in the county in 1893. Today, Fayette County is home to a population of over 29,000 people. The county is largely rural, with agriculture and manufacturing being the main industries. The county is also home to several state parks, including Caesar Creek State Park and Paint Creek State Park.
