About Fulton County

Fulton County, Ohio is located in the northwest corner of the state and is bordered by Michigan, Indiana, and Williams County. It was established in 1835 and named after Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steamboat. The county seat is Wauseon, which was founded in 1854. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans, including the Miami, Ottawa, and Wyandot tribes. The first white settlers arrived in the early 1800s, and the county was officially organized in 1835. The county was largely agricultural in its early years, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. The county also had a thriving lumber industry, with several sawmills located in the area. In the late 1800s, the county began to industrialize, with the construction of several factories and mills. The county also became a major transportation hub, with the construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal, the Toledo and Ohio Central Railroad, and the Wauseon and Western Railroad. The county experienced a population boom in the early 1900s, with the population increasing from 10,000 in 1900 to over 20,000 by 1930. This growth was largely due to the influx of immigrants from Europe, particularly Germany and Poland. Today, Fulton County is a largely rural area, with a population of just over 42,000. The county is home to several small towns and villages, including Delta, Swanton, and Archbold. The county is also home to several state parks, including the Maumee State Forest and the Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area.
