About Geauga County

Geauga County, Ohio is located in the northeastern part of the state and is part of the Greater Cleveland area. It was established in 1806 and is the second oldest county in Ohio. The county was named after a Native American word meaning “raccoon”. The first settlers in the area were the Connecticut Land Company, who arrived in 1798. They were followed by the first permanent settlers in 1806. The county was officially organized in 1806 and the first county seat was located in Chardon. The county was largely agricultural in its early years, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. The county also had a thriving dairy industry. In the late 19th century, the county began to industrialize, with the first railroad being built in 1871. The county experienced a population boom in the early 20th century, with the population increasing from 10,000 in 1900 to over 40,000 in 1930. This growth was largely due to the influx of immigrants from Europe, particularly from Poland and other Eastern European countries. Geauga County is home to several notable attractions, including the Geauga County Historical Society, the Geauga County Fair, and the Geauga Lake amusement park. The county is also home to several wineries and is known for its maple syrup production. Today, Geauga County is a largely rural area, with a population of around 93,000. It is known for its rolling hills, scenic views, and rural charm.
