About Hocking County

Hocking County, Ohio is located in the southeastern part of the state and is part of the Appalachian region. It was formed in 1818 from portions of Fairfield, Athens, and Ross counties. The county was named after the Hocking River, which was named after the Hockhocking Indians, a Native American tribe that lived in the area. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and English descent. The first permanent settlement was established in 1815 in what is now Logan, Ohio. The county was officially organized in 1818 and the first county seat was located in Logan. The county was largely agricultural in its early years, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. The county also had a thriving timber industry, with the Hocking River providing a convenient means of transportation for the logs. The county experienced a period of rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the population increasing from just over 10,000 in 1880 to over 20,000 in 1910. This growth was largely due to the development of the coal and clay industries in the area. The county also experienced a period of industrialization in the early 20th century, with the establishment of several factories in the area. These included the Hocking Glass Company, which produced glassware, and the Hocking Valley Railway, which provided transportation for the coal and clay industries. Today, Hocking County is home to a population of over 29,000 people. The county is still largely agricultural, with the main crops being corn, soybeans, and wheat. The county is also home to several state parks, including Hocking Hills State Park, which is a popular destination for outdoor recreation.
