About Lawrence County

Lawrence County, Ohio is located in the southeastern corner of the state and is part of the Appalachian region. It was formed in 1815 from parts of Gallia and Scioto counties and was named after Captain James Lawrence, a naval hero of the War of 1812. The first settlers in Lawrence County were mostly of German and Irish descent. The county was largely agricultural, with the main crops being corn, wheat, and oats. The county was also home to several iron furnaces, which provided jobs for many of the residents. In the mid-1800s, the county experienced a population boom due to the discovery of coal and oil in the area. This led to the development of several coal mines and oil wells, which provided jobs for many of the residents. The county also experienced a period of industrialization in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Several factories were built in the county, including a glass factory, a paper mill, and a steel mill. These factories provided jobs for many of the residents and helped to spur economic growth in the area. The county also experienced a period of growth in the early 20th century due to the development of the Ohio and Erie Canal. This canal connected the county to the rest of the state and allowed for the transportation of goods and services. Today, Lawrence County is home to a population of over 60,000 people. The county is still largely agricultural, with the main crops being corn, wheat, and oats. The county is also home to several industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and education. The county is also home to several parks and recreational areas, making it a great place to live and visit.
