About Montgomery County

Montgomery County, Ohio is located in the southwestern part of the state and is the fifth most populous county in Ohio. It was established in 1803 and named after Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War hero. The first settlers in the area were Quakers from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1796. They were followed by German immigrants in the early 1800s. The county was officially organized in 1803 and the first county seat was located in Dayton. The county was an important center of industry during the 19th century. The Miami and Erie Canal, which connected the Great Lakes to the Ohio River, was built through the county in 1829. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people, and helped to spur economic growth. The county was also home to several important inventions during this time. In 1837, John W. Van Cleve invented the first practical typewriter in Dayton. In 1844, Charles F. Kettering invented the first electric cash register in Dayton. The county was also an important center of the Underground Railroad. Many of the county's Quaker and German settlers were abolitionists and helped to provide safe passage for escaped slaves. During the Civil War, Montgomery County was home to several Union Army camps and hospitals. After the war, the county continued to grow and develop. The Wright Brothers opened their first bicycle shop in Dayton in 1892 and the city became a major center of aviation. Today, Montgomery County is home to over 535,000 people and is a major center of industry, education, and culture. The county is home to several universities, including the University of Dayton, Wright State University, and Central State University. It is also home to the Dayton International Airport, the National Museum of the United States Air Force, and the Dayton Art Institute.
