Muskingum County, Ohio is located in the east-central part of the state and is part of the Appalachian region. It was formed in 1804 from portions of Washington County and was named after the Muskingum River, which runs through the county. The county seat is Zanesville, which was founded in 1797 and is the largest city in the county. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans, including the Delaware, Shawnee, and Wyandot tribes. The first white settlers arrived in the late 1700s, and the county was officially organized in 1804. During the War of 1812, Muskingum County was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Zanesville. The county was also home to several prominent figures in the early days of the United States, including William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States, and William Tecumseh Sherman, a Union general during the Civil War. In the 19th century, Muskingum County was an important center for industry and transportation. The Ohio and Erie Canal, which connected Lake Erie to the Ohio River, ran through the county, and the National Road, the first federally funded highway in the United States, also ran through the county. The county was also home to several coal mines, brickyards, and other industries. In the 20th century, Muskingum County continued to be an important center for industry and transportation. The county was home to several manufacturing plants, including the Zanesville Pottery Company, which produced pottery and ceramics. The county also had several railroads, including the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. Today, Muskingum County is home to a diverse economy, with industries ranging from manufacturing to healthcare. The county is also home to several parks and recreational areas, including Dillon State Park and the Muskingum River State Park. The county is also home to several colleges and universities, including Ohio University-Zanesville and Zane State College.

Muskingum County is located east of Columbus, Ohio, our state capital. Ebenezer Zane made a settlement here when he stopped on his way from Wheeling, now West Virginia, to Maysville, Kentucky. He was clearing a road called Zane's Trace that ran across Ohio. Zanesville was established on March 1, 1804, by Zane's son-in-law, John McIntire.
