Noble County, Ohio is located in the southeastern part of the state and is part of the Marietta-Parkersburg-Vienna Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was established in 1851 and was named after James Noble, a veteran of the War of 1812 and a member of the Ohio Senate. The first settlers in Noble County were mostly of German and English descent. The first permanent settlement was established in 1812 by a group of German immigrants led by John and Jacob Stutzman. The Stutzman family was the first to build a log cabin in the area. The county was officially organized in 1851 and the first county seat was located in Sarahsville. The county seat was moved to Caldwell in 1854. The economy of Noble County was largely based on agriculture in the 19th century. The county was home to many small farms and the main crops were wheat, corn, oats, and hay. The county also had a thriving timber industry, with many sawmills located in the area. In the early 20th century, the economy of Noble County shifted to manufacturing. The county was home to several factories, including a glass factory, a pottery factory, and a furniture factory. Today, Noble County is home to a diverse economy. The county is home to several large employers, including a paper mill, a plastics manufacturer, and a steel mill. The county is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers. The county is also home to several recreational attractions, including several state parks, a golf course, and a ski resort. The county is also home to several historical sites, including the Sarahsville Historic District and the Noble County Courthouse.
