Paulding County, Ohio is located in the northwestern corner of the state and is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was established in 1820 and was named after Revolutionary War hero John Paulding. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The first county seat was located in Paulding, and the first courthouse was built in 1837. In the late 19th century, the county experienced a period of rapid growth. The railroad arrived in 1881, and the county seat was moved to Paulding in 1883. The county also saw the development of several small towns, including Payne, Antwerp, and Melrose.
