Putnam County, Ohio is located in the northwestern part of the state and is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was established in 1820 and was named after Israel Putnam, a Revolutionary War hero. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans, including the Ottawa, Wyandot, and Shawnee tribes. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and the county was officially organized in 1820. The county seat is located in Ottawa, which was founded in 1831. The county was primarily agricultural in its early years, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. In the late 1800s, the county experienced a period of industrial growth, with the establishment of several factories and mills. The county also became a major producer of coal, with several mines operating in the area. The county experienced a population boom in the early 1900s, with the population increasing from 8,000 in 1900 to over 20,000 by 1930.
