The county was established in 1820 and was named after the Native American leader, Chief Sandusky. The county seat is Fremont, which was founded in 1816. The area was originally inhabited by the Wyandot and Ottawa Native American tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The county was officially organized in 1820 and was named after Chief Sandusky. The county was an important part of the Underground Railroad, with many stops located in the area. During the Civil War, Sandusky County was home to several Union regiments. The economy of Sandusky County has been largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to several large companies, including Whirlpool Corporation, The Andersons, and the Fremont Company.
