Tuscarawas County, Ohio is located in the eastern part of the state and is part of the Appalachian region. It was formed in 1808 from parts of Muskingum and Coshocton counties. The county was named after the Tuscarawas River, which was named by the Delaware Indians who lived in the area. The first settlers in the area were German immigrants who arrived in the early 1800s. They were followed by other settlers from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland. The county was largely agricultural, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. The county was an important part of the Underground Railroad, with many of the county's residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. During the Civil War, Tuscarawas County was a major supplier of food and other supplies to the Union Army. In the late 1800s, the county experienced a period of industrial growth. The Ohio and Erie Canal was built through the county, connecting it to the Great Lakes. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the county. The county also became a major producer of coal, clay, and glass. The county's population grew steadily throughout the 20th century, reaching a peak of over 90,000 in the 1970s. Today, the county is home to over 92,000 people. It is a largely rural area, with agriculture and manufacturing still playing an important role in the local economy. The county is also home to several state parks, including Atwood Lake Park and Tappan Lake Park.
