Vinton County, Ohio is located in the Appalachian region of the state and is the only county in Ohio to be named after a United States Senator. The county was established in 1818 and was named after Samuel Finley Vinton, a prominent politician from the area. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and Irish descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The first county seat was located in Wilkesville, and the first courthouse was built in 1820. In the mid-1800s, the county experienced a period of growth and development. The railroad was extended to the area, and the county seat was moved to McArthur in 1851. The county also saw the establishment of several small towns, including Hamden, Zaleski, and Wilkesville. The county was also home to several industries, including coal mining, timber, and manufacturing. The coal industry was particularly important to the county, and by the early 1900s, Vinton County was the largest coal-producing county in Ohio. The county also experienced a period of decline in the mid-1900s, as the coal industry declined and the population decreased. However, the county has seen a resurgence in recent years, with the establishment of several new businesses and industries. Today, Vinton County is home to a diverse population and is a popular tourist destination. The county is home to several state parks, including Lake Hope State Park and Tar Hollow State Park. The county also boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene, with several festivals and events held throughout the year.
